First Assembly of God is hosting Celebrate Recovery led by Josh Singleton on Friday evenings. It begins with a meal at 6 p.m.
Josh Singleton is on fire for Jesus and
is celebrating his recovery. "I was struggling with a drug
addiction for 12 years.
I tried every type of worldly pleasure imaginable and made bad
decisions. Three years ago I hit rock bottom and hit my knees
and cried out to God," he said.
He moved from home to home and stayed with whoever would take
him in, he added. "I hurt all of my family and manipulated my
friends.
If I knew you, I owed you," Singleton said. From jail to prison,
he said the enemy deceived him into thinking that was the life.
After getting involved with a men's recovery, he got into the
word and started going to church.
"I wanted to talk about Jesus Christ at the meetings, but that
wasn't allowed," he said.
Someone told him about Celebrate Recovery, a Christ centered
bible based program started by John Baker from Saddleback Church
where Rick Warren pastors.
Developed to help codependents find freedom from hurts, hang ups
or habits, the year-long study offers small group lessons and
encouragement for many types of problems including physical or
sexual abuse, drug or alcohol dependency, eating disorders,
financial recovery and more.
On Fridays at 6 p.m., participants enjoy a meal at the Solid
Rock Café in the fellowship hall of First Assembly of God in
Morganton.
Following the meal, praise and worship begins with break out
sessions into small groups.
Melissa Conley said she struggled with being lonely and attends
the A to Z Group for Everyday Struggles. "It is for everybody.
You don't have anything in control unless God is in control,"
Conley said. "It covers everything or if you're just having a
hard week," Singleton said.
The lessons are followed by testimonies the following week,
Singleton added and everything is confidential.
In addition, there are groups for alcohol and drug abuse, and
Singleton said he's looking forward to starting a co-dependency
group and Life Hurts, God Heals group for teens.
Already more than 60 people have attended the first two weeks of
Celebrate Recovery.
"We sit down and talk about the ups and downs and what we've
been dealing with all week," Singleton said.
"The biggest thing is it's all about Jesus. It's amazing what
Christ is doing through this program," he said.
